What is lift sharing / car pooling / ride sharing?: Although it can go by many names, lift sharing is basically pre-organised hitchhiking where the passenger normally gives a petrol contribution to the driver. This makes both parties save money, as well as help the environment, and reduce the traffic on the roads. The lift is prearranged by the driver and passenger/s contacting each other before the journey, and agreeing on meeting points, drop-off points, and cost contributions.

I've tried to register on www.rideshare.co.uk, but I didn't receive my activation email.: If you have not receive an activation email, you will most likely find that it is in your junk mail / spam folder. To see if this has happened please:

Log-in to your email account, and open the spam / junk mail folder. If the email is there please mark the email as "this is not junk" and open it from within your inbox. Then follow the instructions contained in the email to complete you registration.

If the email is not in your junk mail folder. Please contact our Customer Service team.

I left my mobile in the car that I was in, and need to contact the driver.: Please send us as many details about your journey as you can (Name of the driver, time of departure, meeting and drop-off points, etc.) in an email through our Customer Service page. We will try to sort out your inquiry as quickly as possible!

Please save your future lift offers in your "notepad" so that you always have the contact details and journey details easy to find. Then you will even have the details for journeys that had to be cancelled (e.g. if there were no places left).

How much does it cost to use www.rideshare.co.uk?: The basic website features for finding and offering lifts on www.rideshare.co.uk are completely free.

As a passenger you simply pay any contributions towards petrol to the driver. The amount you need to contribute should be agreed between you and the driver. In the guidelines it states between 7 and 9 pounds per 100 miles.

How much is the petrol contribution for the driver?: The driver and passenger agree with each other the pick-up point and petrol contributions! The cost contribution from the passenger is something to be negotiated. You agree with the driver or passenger how much the contribution will be before the journey starts. There are 2 different way in which the cost contributions can be calculated:

Variable Costs: The travel costs are dependent on the number or passengers. www.rideshare.co.uk recommends that a fair travel cost can be calculated by: fuel costs + 10 percent / number of people in the car. If you would like you can use our Cost Calculator to help.
Fixed Costs: A fixed cost is set based on the expected number of passengers. These costs are generally a bit more, as the driver alone takes the risk that some passengers won't show up. In general contributions are between 7 and 9 pounds per 100 miles when only one passenger is expected.

I forgot my password!: I you have forgotten your password, you can click on the link "Forgotten your Password" in the top right hand corner by the log-in box, or click on this link and you will go to the page for setting up a new password. Once you submit your details, an email will be sent to you will instructions on how to complete the setup of a new automatically generated password.

I forgot my username!: It is possible to log-in with both your username and the email address that you registered with. So if you cannot remember your username, please try to log in with your email address instead.

I've bought a games console on eBay - can I search for someone who can bring it to me?: If you would like to look for a lift for a package or some furniture, etc. you can note this in the comment field.

Why can't I log in any more?: One of the following might have happened:

a) Cookies: The set-up of your browser (e.g. Firefox or Explorer) is not allowing cookies. Cookies are small files which are commonly used by websites to save small amounts of data on your computer. They are used by our systems to recognise you when you visit the site again. No data other than your username and the time of your last visit to the site is saved. To change the set-up of you browser, so that cookies are allowed, please follow the instructions below:

Internet Explorer: Select "Tools" in the menu and click on "Internet Options". This opens a new window. In the new window click on the "Privacy" tab, and in the "Settings" area, drag the slider on the scale so that it says "Medium". Then click on "OK", and cookies should be enabled to the extent that you can login to the site.

Mozilla Firefox: Select "Tools" in the menu, and click on "Options...". This opens a new window. In the new window click on the "Privacy" tab, and select the box next to where is says "Enable Cookies". Now click on "OK" and cookies should enabled so that you can login to the site.

b) You have forgotten your password: If you have forgotten your password, you can use the link "Forgotten your Password?" under the log-in box in the top right corner, or this link to create a new password. After following the instructions on the page and the email that is sent, a new automatically generated password will be sent to you by email.

I don't want my contact details to be visible to everyone. What options do I have for my data privacy?: When using rideshare.co.uk some sensitive data like your email address or telephone number has to be shown in your offer/request. Our platform gives you the option of exactly which contact data you would like to be shown, and also helps protect any data that is shown. Below are some of our features, and recommendations for protecting email addresses:
a) The email address on www.rideshare.co.uk is protected from spam by being displayed as a picture and not as text. Because of this it is unfortunately not possible to click on an email address and go straight into an email program. You have to manually type the email address in to you email program.

b) If you give an email address, we advise that you use a free email address like gmail, hotmail, or yahoo. Free email addresses have proved to be good at protecting you from spam.

c) We recommend that you don't use a company email address in your advert.

d) If you don't want to show an email address in your advert, please tick the "don't show my email address" box.

Is it possible to have major events such as festivals included in the city lists short term?: For events where more than 10,000 people are expected to attend, it is possible to add events to the cities list for a short period. For example festivals like Glastonbury and T in the Park could be added.
